- Today I was busy calling BBS and trying out the 0014 number, when i tried to
- Box it didn't work.
- So I had a word to my dad and asked him how it would work he didn't know.
- But he came up with a story.. When I was a boy my friends used to quickly
- tap out there number with the on/off buttun. He said he could never get it to
- work. That was with the hold fashion phones with the lever.
- But with a curious mind I tried it, well it should work because they are
- basically the same thing just a diferent casing and a few other things.
- It does work on all phones. But you must be really quick with the fingers.
- Its kinda like morse code but you just tap out the numbers in full one by one
- Its best to experiment do not do a set out number straight away. Get to
- understand it.
- A bit of a warning It's HARD to do it by the phone so make up a device to aid
- you along.
- You will probablly get a lot of Telescum anoucments saying that the number
- is not availible atc.................
-
- HAVE FUN..
-
- Actually it only works on Touch phones to my knowlege at the momoment

- don't know who wrote this, but... what's going on is the tapping of
- the hook switch is simulating pulse dialing. Pulse dialing is done by
- very quickly and precisely breaking and re-making the connection
- between the phone and the exchange. The exchange detects this as a
- change in the current flow on the line and converts it to the number.
-
- The hookswitch does exactly the same thing, but the exchange is
- clever eonugh to know wether you're hanging up or dialing, by the
- timing - that's indirectly why you have to hang up for about 1/2 a
- sec or more before picking up again in order to get a dialtone again.
-
- The accuracy of the timing is obviously critical, otherwise the
- exchange gets the number wrong. The old dials were mechancly
- engineered with weights and such to be quite accurate.
-
- By tapping the hookswitch you can simulate the dialpulses, and if
- you're very good, you'll get the right number (!). Personally, I
- suggest testing with 199 or something so as to not piss people off
- too much. Oh, and it works on ALL phones... simply because all
- phones have a hookswitch and all exchanges support pulse dialing
- (well, in Oz, anyway..!)
